The Director-General (DG), National Youth Service
Corps, Brig.-Gen. Johnson Olawunmi, on Thursday (09/04/2015) in Port Harcourt, called on Politicians
and their supporters not to vent their frustration on Corps Members working as
the Independent National Electoral Commission ad-hoc staff during today’s Governorship
Election.
Brig.-Gen. Olawunmi made the call following the
violence that trailed the March 28th Presidential Election in Rivers State
where Corps Members were allegedly harassed by hoodlums.
The NYSC DG on separate visits to the Air Force
commander at the 97 Special Operations Unit, Air Commodore Olusegun Philips and
the Commissioner of Police, Hossiah Karma, said the lives of corps members were
precious to the nation and nobody must attempt to endanger their lives.
“We are making a passionate appeal to the
military, police and other security agencies to help protect the lives of corps
members working with INEC”, he said.
“Rivers
State is a flash point;
therefore, we do not want any harm happening to these people. Politicians should
please call their supporters to order. They should warn them not to cause
violence and inflict any harm on corps members who are on national assignment.
They must never vent their anger or frustrations on these innocent young men
and women whose parents have toiled hard to train them through higher
institutions.”
