The All Progressives Congress (APC), governorship candidate
in Lagos state,
Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has said that President Goodluck Jonathan deserves
endless commendation for conceding defeat after the March 28th presidential
election.
Mr. Ambode made the remark on Tuesday in Ikeja while
speaking with members of the state’s Medicine Dealers Association.
“Nigerians should be grateful to President Jonathan for his
sportsmanship and unassuming gesture.
“He was magnanimous in defeat by congratulating the
President-elect, Gen. Buhari. We really need to thank him. Such gestures are
good for democracy,” he said.
According to him, Jonathan demonstrated `a very rare’
leadership virtue by conceding defeat to Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and
congratulating him on the latter’s victory at the poll.
“Such gesture is required of politicians to deepen the
nation’s democracy and strengthen the electoral process,” he stated.
Mr. Ambode also described the March 28th elections
as “the most peaceful” in Nigeria’s
history so far, saying it was an indication that the country’s democracy was
maturing.
He, however, urged Lagosians to replicate the victory his
party recorded in the presidential election by voting massively for him,
stating that it would be to the advantage of the residents if Lagos is governed by the ruling political
party at the centre.
“I will not discriminate against anybody if I am elected.
Whether you are Igbo, Hausa or Ijaw, once you are a resident, you are a
Lagosian.
“I will protect all interests and I will work for all
Lagosians,” Mr. Ambode assured.
Mr. Ambode described dealers of pharmaceutical products as
strategic to the state’s wellbeing, saying he would protect and promote their
businesses if elected.
“You are important to Lagos.
If I am elected I will not increase your taxes.
“I will check incidences of multiple taxations. I will
provide the needed environment for your businesses to flourish,” he said.
